Faggetter Family

The derivation of the name Faggetter probably originates from France from Faggette or similar. The final R added to the name seems peculiarly English. Faggetter and Faggotter seems most common today. I have found ffaggetter (ff makes an F), Faggetur, Faggoter, Faggeter and others. Faggetter occurs in the south of the England in London, Hampshire and particularly Surrey. A family of Faggetters are recorded near Chichester in Sussex at the end of 16C and beginning of 17C but then appear to have died out. There are emigrants to Canada, USA and Australia.

My Faggetters are all from Pirbright and Horsell in Surrey. See my tree of Surrey Surnames for descendants of Henry Faggetter from Pirbright.

SOURCES

The following are a list of sources I have used and others may find useful.

Faggetter baptisms for Surrey from the International Genealogy Index.

Faggetter marriages from the West Surrey Family History Society and International Genealogy Index. (see the bottom left hand corner to switch between the two, if you have problems reading this file then tell me and revert to IGI Faggetter marriages)

Faggetter births, marriages and deaths starting when records began in 1837 for England and Wales from the General Record Office at St Catherine's House, London.

Faggetter's Favourite

The Faggetter's Favourite rodedendron was given an Award of Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1933. The Journal of the Society records the event as follows:

April 25, 1933
Awards Recommended
To Rhododendron 'Faggetter's Favourite' as a flowering shrub (votes unanimous), from Mr W.C. Slocock, Woking. A hybrid derived from R. Fortunei the other parent unknown, with large and broadly expanded flowers, pink flushed at the margins and carried in large trusses about 7 inches across.

This rhododendron was grown at Knaphill Nursery, Surrey. On a beam in one of the buildings at the nursery are the words "James died July 1878 A 74" which correspond to James Faggetter (1803-1878). The "Faggetter's Favourite" is named after Edwin Faggetter (1834-1856) his son the Chief propagator in the nursery.

It shows resistance to feeding by adult root weevils and is widely admired (for example in Canada) and widely available (for example in Surrey and USA) .

The nursery is still trading all these years later and still supplies the Faggetter Favourite Rhododendron

A Rhododendron named "Faggetters Folly" is rumoured to exist, I would love to know more!

Canada, USA and Australia

I understand that Faggetters in North America descend from either John or George Faggetter who left England at the end of the 19C. See my researches on North American Faggetters.

My Grandmothers cousin Ted went to Australia and his family is still there.

In 1849 at the age of 15 Charles Fellows Faggotter went to South Australia as crew and deserted his ship on arrival. Once there he was determined not to be found . . .see the Faggotter page.
